Excellent book about dealing with mental illness in an age before better treatment was available. The book kept me interested from start to finish. It is largely non-fiction, but at the end of the book, there is a good explanation about the parts which were embellished. I read it based on a recommendation and found it much better than I anticipated.Product details

This book combines an interesting personal narrative, history and mystery into one compelling narrative. It kept me reading and thinking throughout. What were the factors that led to the tragic event? Could or should anyone have done anything differently? How might these events have affected me if I had lived them? A very enjoyable and thought provoking book.

While it's hard enough to imagine what goes on in the mind and heart of someone developing mental instability, it's even tougher to grasp the many conflicted thoughts, feelings, and actions of those around them. The author does an admirable job of delving these murky, eerie waters.
I was interested in reading this book because I know the area and have an interest in the geography and the history of it. I was not disappointed at all. It is a really well researched and written story. Even so, I was a bit hesitant to recommend it for our local book club selection because it deals with mental illness and might be disturbing to some. I needn't have worried. Everyone in book club loved it as much as I did, and we had a great and lively discussion that week. I don't wish for another family tragedy/mystery for the author, but I hope she publishes another story soon.
